My name is Ken Lobley, and I, like
many husbands, have spent lots of time trying to support my wife
Margaret through her many weight loss attempts. She’d tried so many
different methods she seemed like a guinea pig for the diet and weight
loss industry, not to mention how much she’d contributed to their
profits over the years. What she had learned though was that none of
them worked in the long term, despite whatever short term ‘miracles’
they might deliver.

Maybe the worst part of it was the

7 things the weight loss industry doesn’t want you to know
During my research I made some very interesting discoveries:
1. Diets where you eat – or avoid – certain types or combinations of foods are doomed to failure...
All medical authorities tell you that in order to remain healthy, your
body needs a range of foods, each with their own contribution to make:
proteins for growth, carbohydrates for energy, the correct fats to aid
the absorption of certain vitamins, and so on. They even publish easy
to follow charts and guidelines showing you what proportions of your
daily food intake should be made up of the different food groups.
When your body is denied its supply of a particular food type, it needs
to compensate in some way to keep functioning properly. For example if
you drastically reduce your daily intake of calories in an attempt to
shed weight quickly you body will respond by slowing down your
metabolism – the rate at which you burn up the calories – to compensate
for the fewer calories it has to work with.
Your body doesn’t understand that you are trying to lose weight, it
works on a much more basic level that is focused on survival, and so it
adapts its functions to the amount of fuel that’s available to run them.
And if you do manage to hit that target weight and so ease up on the
regime you’ve chosen, you are suddenly giving your body an additional
amount of calories that it has gotten used to doing without, the first
result of which is likely to be a conversion of some of these to fat
stores to build up supplies for the next bad experience (which means
the next time you decide to diet).
So you’re back where you started – with more weight than you want to carry.
Similar things happen if you avoid carbohydrates or fats, on your
chosen diet. Your body has to find a source for all the nutrients and
fuel it needs to work properly or it has to compensate by slowing down,
which is why diets can so often leave you feeling tired and lacking in
energy.
2. Pills and potions are short-term solutions as well – and some can cause their own problems
If you take a pill or food replacement supplement that isn’t part of
your normal food intake, then again it’s obvious that, unless you’re
willing to keep taking it forever, any effect it’s having will only
last as long as you keep up the regime.
Some pills have been found to have unexpected side effects that make
them unsuitable for use by everyone. If you suddenly find yourself
becoming uncharacteristically irritable, or experiencing a skin rash,
you might have fallen victim to this. In some cases the side effects
may be so unpleasant that the prospect of losing weight using this
method becomes very unattractive.
3. Let’s face it, there’s nothing more tedious than dieting
There is nothing quite as monotonous as dieting, whether it’s the

5. Continual failure with dieting can affect your health and happiness
Yo-yo dieting is the term used by government health
authorities to describe the situation where people go on a diet, lose
some weight but then put it back on again, then go on another diet and

genuine desire to lose weight coming up against the ineffectiveness of
the methods they are choosing, and is recognized by government health
authorities as being harmful to people’s general health and well being.
The British Dietetic Association (BDA) surveyed 4,000 men and women
about their dieting habits. They found that most people are aware that
fluctuating between constant weight gain and loss is bad for their
health, but they still diet.
The BDA concluded that their research had confirmed their original premise - fad-diets just don't work.
Similarly, a US government review found that two-thirds of U.S. dieters
regained all the weight they had lost within a year, and 97% had gained
it all back within five years.
As Benjamin Franklin said ‘It is insane to repeat the same behavior while expecting a different outcome’.
6. With weight loss, fast is the formula for failure
Many diets, pills and potions and weight loss regimes draw you in by
suggesting that you can lose significant amounts of weight quickly,
sometimes in a ridiculously short amount of time. You’ve seen the hype:
‘Lose 11lbs in 10 days with our miracle method!’
‘See the fat just melt away’
Think about how you put weight on in the first place. You didn’t wake
up one morning and find you were 30 lbs heavier (that sort of thing
only happens in nightmares). You didn’t even put on 11lbs in 10 days.
Truth is it was a much more gradual process that you maybe didn’t
really notice for a while.
So why would you expect to lose weight so quickly? It just isn’t
natural. And just think about those pictures of people who have taken
drastic steps to reduce their weight: all that extra skin that hasn’t
had chance to keep pace with the process. Wouldn’t you just hate to
